Telstra Perth Fashion Festival
Jaime Lee | Lightyears
Demi Couture designer Jaime Lee wowed Fashion Paramount at the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival on Thursday night with her highly anticipated first ready to wear collection ‘Lightyears’. Major drew inspiration for this futuristic collection from Tokyo theme parks, Japan’s Robot Restaurant and the streets of Harajuku.
An LED rainbow and glitter unicorns on skateboards framed the runway as life-sized Barbie-esque models draped in glittering gowns, psychedelic prints and dragon knee high boots took to the runway for what was a truly unique and unexpected runway experience. 90’s pop tunes set the atmosphere as one of my all time favourite songs ‘Barbie Girl’ had everyone dancing in their seats.
Jaime Lee’s signature intricate detailing and sheer lace was evident, combined with heavily beaded gowns and two piece garments in new hyper colour digital prints and 3D textile explorations. These designs are certainly not for the faint hearted as Major knows how to use colour.
Lightyears evokes feelings of futuristic fantasy, however, for me the show brought me back to my childhood playing with Barbie dolls and watching My Little Pony. Jaime Lee is a true visionary who is not afraid to break boundaries and push techniques to create a truly remarkable runway experience.
Jaime Lee’s Tokyo technology inspired installation and pop-up shop is now open at Enex100 level 3 from 18 September – 4 October. I stopped by and even met the lovely Jaime Lee herself and had a complete fan girl moment. I highly recommend a visit to get up close and personal to see the sheer detailing that goes into each one of these pieces that in their own rights are works of art.
