TOP TEN TIPS FOR WEARING WHITE:
Choose a silhouette that flatters your body shape, elongates your figure and nips in at the waist to create a feminine frame. The silhouette of a dress should adhere to the elements and principles of good design which includes fit, form, flow, proportion, and balance. The perfect silhouette shaped dress should enhance the body’s shape and not overwhelm it.
The Review Australia dress featured above is a perfect example as the sweetheart bodice creates a flattering neckline while the plane band draws in the waist. The skirt has a slight A-line which means the dress is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the hem creating a streamlined shape.
Always apply your makeup before getting dressed into white clothes. There is nothing worse than applying foundation or eyeshadow and it lands on the front of your clean dress. Yes, I am sure this has happened all of us at some point or another. If this isn’t an option try open loose eyeshadow powders, bronzers and makeup tubes as far away from your body as possible. Another tip for getting dressed is to cover your face with a scarf or muslin cloth as this will reduce the risk of your makeup staining the fabric as it can be difficult to wash out.
FOOD / DRINKS
This is where it can all go wrong! Where possible always cover the front of your dress with a napkin or towel. If these are not available use an item of clothing that you don’t mind sacrificing. I know this sometimes does not look socially acceptable but it is better than wearing your dinner. Also when wearing white to an occasion try drink clear drinks, for example, white wine or a gin and tonic and avoid red wine at all costs.
White and cream clothes always look better with a fresh golden glow, especially in summer. Lace is given more detail as a tan creates a contrast between the skin and the clothes. I love Cocoa Brown but generally, I opt for a spray tan as there is no staining or transferring onto clothes.
As with any outfit, accessories really can make the entire look. It’s amazing how adding a statement necklace or bag can transform an outfit. Accessories are also a great way to reinvent and update an outfit that you have worn before.
Adding a splash of colour to your white outfit will instantly change the overall look of the ensemble. You can do this by simply adding a pink lipstick or a bright blazer. As I love colour I often add a pink jacket and pink heels to change up my look. Alternatively, add a classic black blazer and heels to create a polished and sophisticated monochrome outfit.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
With so many options readily available online and in shops (shop below) it can be hard to pick a piece that will stand the test of time. I suggest choosing a feminine and elegant style like the Review Australia dress featured to your capsule wardrobe.
Good quality does not only apply to a brand but the fabric and the design of the garment. The Review Australia dress is not only made from high-quality fabric but the design is well executed. The cute cap sleeves are constructed from a beautiful lace that subtly cover my arms, perfect for anyone that is conscious of this area. While the ruffled hemline adds a soft flirtiness to the structured bodice.
It is always a good idea to check that zips and fastenings are secure and easy to open and close, unfortunately, a sticky zip can sometimes break unexpectedly and inconveniently when you are rushing out the door to an event and wreck havoc on your day. Yes, this has happened me.
Once upon a time I didn’t mind wearing clothes that were uncomfortable as long as I looked good. Nowadays I am too sensible to buy clothes that fit poorly. Choosing clothes that look good but are easy to wear can be more difficult than it sounds. My top tip for checking that something is not going to pinch after a few hours is to sit down in the garment. It’s funny that we normally just try clothes on standing up, but we normally spend most of our time when wearing sitting. My second tip is to flex your arms especially if the garment has a fitted sleeve or if the fabric is not stretchy.
My life moto is, ‘when in doubt leave it out’, if you have to ask if it’s okay to wear the garment then it probably isn’t. So, don’t wear white to a wedding unless stated on the invitation. I think it’s best to let the bride have her day and wear a different colour.
BONUS TIP: WEATHER
It might go without saying, but try and steer clear of wearing white when in the rain. White can sometimes become see-through and the dirt of bad-weather days is an easy way to ruin your outfit.
