5 TIPS TO KICK START YOUR FITNESS GOALS
There is no time like the present to start working on your fitness goals
It’s a few weeks into the New Year and that renewed level of motivation and determination to get fit and healthy has gradually diminished or maybe you are still procrastinating your 2017 fitness journey? Either way, you are not alone.
If you read my goals for 2017 blogpost here, like most of you, getting fit and healthy is a top priority for me this year. In an effort to achieve your goals I have put together my top 5 tips to help give you a kick start.
‘by failing to prepare you are preparing to fail’
I love this quote and it really is so true that’s why my number one top tip to achieving your fitness and health goals this year is to get organised. No, sometimes it’s not fun and you will have to work on getting organised but I guarantee it will be worth the extra effort.
If you follow me on snapchat you will know that I spend Sunday afternoon’s preparing my lunch meals and snacks for the working week. By putting in this extra effort and making my lunch, it means I won’t end up buying food that is not in line with my healthy eating goals.
In order to achieve your fitness goals you will need to make time to workout, I advise scheduling your fitness/gym sessions a week in advance. Where possible I try and attend 6 am classes, this means I wake up and go straight to the gym and before I know it, my daily exercise is done.
My advice is to book into exercise sessions at least a few days in advance as they can fill up fast and be realistic. Working out leaves your body feeling tired, so, make sure to schedule in rest days.
Balance – Find the balance between being over optimistic/ambitious and not pushing yourself. By example, don’t set yourself a goal of running 30 minutes every morning before work if you haven’t been running in 6 months. Start off slow, build momentum and work towards your goal.
Signing up to fitness classes really helps me stay on track with my fitness goals. I love to think I am motivated enough to work out on my own but I normally don’t. When I book into classes I make an intentional commitment to hit my fitness target for the week. Group workouts also push you to train harder and you won’t regret that feeling of achievement after a great session. Above all remember working out doesn’t have to be a chore, pick an exercise you enjoy doing.
When it comes to working out, having a set routine certainly makes things easier. Since most of us are creatures of habit, it can become easy to head to a class or the gym at the same time every day.
However, it is a good idea to shake things up every now and then and try a different form of exercise. Personally, I like to switch between yoga, pilates and boot camp.
Do Not Negotiate
Do not negotiate with that voice in your head. I used to book my boot camp classes for after work. Then, all day long and the whole drive to boot camp I would negotiate with myself if I would go or not. Does this scenario sound familiar?
Decide what exercise you are going to do for the week then stick to it and do not waste time negotiating with yourself. I have never left a workout thinking, I wish I put that off until tomorrow. I know working out is hard and requires motivation but believe me when I say you will thank yourself later.
When it comes to fitness, there’s no better way to feel motivated than with some new activewear- if you look the part, you’ll soon find that you feel the part too. I love to invest in new activewear throughout the year. It may sound silly but when I feel good in my workout wear it inspires me to work harder and push myself to look my best.
I have put together some activewear suggestions below – simply click on the image to shop the product.
Now is the time to get fit and healthy, start right now and you will thank yourself later – I hope these 5 tips help.
